Fun Food Find Friday!!

When I was young my Grandma would bring us a bag of candy every time she came to visit. One of my favorite things she brought was a mixture of nuts, candy, candy covered nuts, and candy covered licorice. I was so excited when these Panda Candy Coated Licorice candy came out. They remind me of my Grandma, and now my kids and I can enjoy this healthier version of the yummy treats I ate in my youth. Try them you'll love them!

I bought these at the health food stores.

Fun Food Find Friday!!

With summer coming that means it's time for Carnivals, and Fairs to go to. My kids always want the Cotton Candy when we go to those types of places. So when I found this Organic Cotton Candy by Spun City, I had to order some to see what it was like. It tasted just like any Cotton Candy you would by anywhere. The only ingredient is evaporated cane juice and flavoring.

Fun Food Find Friday!!

I used to loved Jelly Belly's so much! Their pear flavor was my most favorite. So you can imagine my excitement when I found these, Jelly Belly's Naturals. They tastes just as good as the normal Jelly Belly's that have the high fructose corn syrup and all of the other not so good for you ingredients. These are made with evaporated cane juice, and tapioca syrup, with real flavors from fruit. They are delicious.

The funny thing is I couldn't find these on the Jelly Belly web site. I looked all over for them. I've only been able to find them at http://www.naturalcandystore.com/. Try them you'll love them!

Candy Cane Valentine's Suckers

Valentine's Day is just one week away!
I have always loved Valentine's Day. When I was little my mom and dad would wake us up with a special valentine or the valentine would be placed on our plates before breakfast. Then when I went to Jr. High and High School a rose would always be sent to me by a secret admirer. I didn't figure it out, that it was my dad, until I was in High School. :] So I've tried to make it fun for my kids too. So starting today we are making all of our yummy treats! I've made these suckers for a few years now. I can't remember where I got the idea from. They are so easy, cute, and always impress people who haven't seen them before. So I hope you did what I told you to do, and bought extra candy canes when they went on clearance after Christmas. :]
Pre heat your oven to 225*F.
First, you start off by unwrapping your candy canes. I always use the organic ones I told you about here. Then you decide what size you want them. In this picture you can see that I have four different sizes. The one on the far left is full size, meaning I didn't break off any of the candy cane. The other 3 I broke off part of the bottom of the candy cane.
Then you place them on a cookie sheet as shown here, with sucker sticks at the bottom.
Put them in the oven for six minutes, you'll need more time if they are not organic.
When they come out the candy canes will be just soft enough for you to pinch the two sides together. Both at the top and over the stick, as shown here. If they are not quite soft enough put them back in the oven for another minute. You do NOT want to over bake them!!

If you do slightly over bake them the candy cane will start to melt out to the side. You can take a tooth pick and along the edge push the melted part back.
When you are finished pinching them together place on wax paper and push slightly down so that they lay flat on your counter. You have to do this before they cool, or they will break. You'll notice in this picture that two of the Suckers have their sticks up in the center of the heart.
That is so you can fill the heart with white chocolate, then top with organic sprinkles (I'll show you what kind I use this Friday). I got that idea from the February Family Fun magazine this year. If you are not going to fill them, leave the sucker sticks just at the bottom of the heart.
When they are dry this is what they look like. So cute, so easy, and I was surprised at how delicious the white chocolate was with the peppermint. Oh so good!!
This is my favorite size of this suckers. I think they are cute this size. I broke off about an inch of the bottom to get it this small.
Last year, this is what my son gave to his teacher in school for Valentine's day. The mug I got from the dollar store. Then I put Styrofoam in the mug. Then stuck suckers in. The recipe for the other heart shaped aguave suckers is found here. After that put some confetti to cover the Styrofoam. When your all finished, wrap the whole thing with cellophane and tie with a bow. So fun, creative, unique, delicious, and the teacher loved it of course! Have fun making your Candy Cane Valentine's Suckers!
Candy Cane Valentine's Suckers
Ingredients
12 organic candy canes
1 package white chocolate
12 sucker sticks
sprinkles (Gluten free)
Directions
Preheat oven to 225*F. Spray a cookie sheet with non stick cooking spray. Unwrap candy canes and place together forming a heart shape on prepared cookie sheet. Break off bottom of candy canes to desired heart shape. Place one sucker stick between two candy canes at the bottom of the heart shape (remember, if filling with chocolate place sucker stick slightly up into the middel of the heart shape). Put cookie sheet in oven for six minutes. Remove from oven and pinch together the two candy canes both at the top where the heart meets, and also the bottom where the stick is. Make sure to really cover the sucker sticks with the melted candy canes. Transfer to wax paper and push down slightly on candy canes to make sure they are flat to the counter top and let cool. Melt chocolate in glass bowl in microwave according to package directions. Fill center of heart shaped suckers with chocolate. Add sprinkles. Let cool and completely dry, then enjoy!

Fun Food Find Friday!!

Back in December when I found the Organic Candy Canes, I also ordered these. Organic Mint Swirls Candy. As you can see they are a little off white in color because they are made with evaporated cane juice. The red ones taste just like candy canes and the green ones, spearmint, are so delicious! My kids were so excited to get something a little different from Santa. It was great fun.
To order them go here. Or just go to www.naturalcandystore.com.

Fun Food Find Friday!!

Our Fun Food Find for today are the candy canes I was telling you about, Pure Fun Organic Candy Canes. These are so delicious!! They are made with evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup, so much much MUCH better than regular candy canes. My kids just love these.
There is one problem with these, I couldn't find them anywhere local. Non of Health food stores ordered them this year. But I did find them on line for a cheaper price. Go here to order them. They also have some other organic candies that I ordered that I'm going to try. Just remember to check the ingredients before you order. Some of their stuff says organic and then it is made with refined sugar. If you order them today have them shipped in three days to get here by Christmas, good luck! Merry Christmas!!

Fun Food Find Friday!!

Today our Fun Food Find is another wonderful bulk food item, Honey Taffy. In our home we love these taffy's. They have a few flavors. My favorite is the peppermint. When the kids got taffy from the parades over the 4th of July we were able to trade them with these taffy's. Just to see what the difference was in flavor I tried a peppermint taffy from the parade, I didn't swallow it just tasted it and spit it out. Then I tried a honey taffy. I was so amazed and the difference in taste! The honey taffy had ten times more flavor than the parade taffy. I love it when I find a healthier alternative that tastes so much better than the stuff that isn't good for you. Go try some for yourself and see.
You can find these at the health food stores.

Fun Food Find Friday!!

This week our fun food find is another bulk item, Jelly Beans. A few years ago at Easter time I was looking for some healthier candy for my children. I didn't want them missing out on the fun traditions, and I didn't want to have all of the refined sugar either. These jelly beans were perfect! They are made with evaporated cane juice and are very good. Again these are not as colorful as regualr jelly beans because they do not have all of the food coloring. But they are just as good. We also use these to put in the middle of our home made suckers.
You can find these in the bulk sections of Health Food stores.

Fun Food Find Friday!!

Today I wanted to share with you these Gummy Bears. I talked about them last week in this post. We sometimes add them to our home made suckers. I fill Easter eggs with these and if we have a pinata I put them in baggies. If my children bring home candy from school or from a friends house I have some healthier treats at home they can trade the candy in for. I use these as one of the trades. They are made with evaporated cane juice. They are very yummy and like most organic candies they do not have a lot of food coloring in them. That is a good thing and as you can see they are not quite as colorful as normal gummy bears. The color doesn't bother me or my children. The taste is great.
You can find these in the bulk sections of health food stores. Just remember to read the ingredients when you are shopping in the bulk section. :] Happy Snacking!

Fun Food Find Friday!

Yummy Earth Organic Suckers is our fun food find today. If you don't have time to make your own homemade suckers like I told you about yesterday, you can buy these. The taste is very good. They are not too sweet like conventional suckers. They are made with evaporated cane juice. They color the suckers with beet and carrot juice, so no dyes! And no you can not taste the beet or carrot. :] I keep these all over, in the car, in my purse, in our 72 hour kits, and I've even taken lots of these to my children's school. The teachers have used them to give to all of their students and especially to my children when other treats are given.
You can find these at the health food stores in their bulk sections. I've also bought these from amazon.com for very cheep too.

Homemade Suckers

We love homemade suckers in my home. I've been making suckers since...well to be honest I can't remember when I started making them. My mom always made them growing up and I'm not sure when she started teaching me how. I've been making these healthier suckers for about three years now.
There are so many fun things that you can do with homemade suckers. You can do half flavors like shown in the picture below. This one is half strawberry and half pina colada, my personal favorite.
You can add jelly beans, gummy bears, and gum to them either in the middle or just sticking out. My mom was very creative with the suckers we grew up with. We always made them for our Valentine's to take to school. Now you can't do that because they're not wrapped but I still make them for my kids to take to neighbor friends. Depending on the molds you have, you really can make them for every holiday.
So now that you know some of the possibilities of suckers, let me share with you how I've changed my mom's recipe and made it a little healthier. First of all I use evaporated cane juice, then I use Agave, that's it! If you search it on the internet you'll find lots of places that say you can't make hard candy using Agave. Well I'm here to tell you, you can! See my pictures. I've also made suckers with just Agave and no evaporated cane juice. The pina colada half from the sucker in the picture was made with just Agave and water. So have fun with it, experiment at home, and have your kids help you with the molds and sticks.

Homemade Agave Suckers

Ingredients
1/2 cup evaporated cane juice
3 tablespoons agave
1/4 cup water
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon flavoring
food coloring (optional)
Directions
In a medium sauce pan on stove top combine evaporated cane juice, agave, and water over medium high heat. Once combined, cover and bring to boil for one minute. Then uncover and place candy thermometer on the side of pan and cook until the temperature almost reaches 300*F, or until drops of the syrup form hard balls in cold water. Remove promptly, the temperature will continue to raise after taking it off the stove and you don't want it to burn. Stir until the large bubbles have gone down, let sit for 30 seconds. Next stand back and add food coloring, flavoring, and stir. Be careful when adding flavoring it will cause steam to raise! Make sure that the flavoring and coloring are well incorporated. Do not add to molds until the candy liquid starts to thicken slightly. Once the candy liquid is slightly thick pour into slightly greased molds and let cool completely before serving. If adding gummy bears or other types of healthier candy (see future posts) wait to add them until the candy liquid has cooled down even more in the molds or the candy will melt.
Tips:
-If you are using an oil based flavoring you don't need to add that much, only 1/4 teaspoon. The flavoring should tell you if it is oil based or not. If it isn't an oil based flavoring then add 1/2 teaspoon.
-Because Agave is not clear some of the flavors you don't have to add coloring to. I never add coloring to my root beer, because the candy liquid is already brown.
-If you've ever made suckers before you will have a hard time waiting for the liquid to thicken. Be patient!!! Just trust me, I've been making these for years now and I've messed up a lot. Agave takes longer to cool down than corn syrup does.
-Make sure you have your mold ready with the sticks in them before starting to make the suckers.
-Agave can burn very easily, so Watch the temperature closely!
-This recipe only makes about 6 large suckers and about 10 small suckers. It can be doubled very easily. I like to make several different flavors and not have suckers coming out of my ears.

Fun Food Find Friday!

Today our fun food find is Carob Chips. Carob is a chocolate substitute. There are a few differnt types of carob chips. Some better tasting than others that's for sure. Now that a WinnCo grocery store has opened up close to where I live I have now found the best carob chips I've ever tasted! They are located in their bulk section and the price isn't too expensive. The taste is sweet and for those who don't like the taste of carob, try these and it will change your mind I'm sure of it!

Fun Food Find Friday!!

The food find today are Clif kid organic Z Bars. I was amazed at the flavor of these bars! They are so incredible! Even the chocolate is organic so it's great to eat. The sweetener is evaporated cane juice, they are basically gluten free (may contain traces of wheat), and low fat so I can eat them too! The chocolate brownie really does taste like a brownie! These are great replacements for candy bars or brownies. I put them in my purse, 72 hour kits, and in our car kit. The only problem is trying to keep the kids away from them to get them to last longer. :]
The cheapest place to buy these is at Costco, though you can find them at the Health Food stores too. I haven't looked for these at the Grocery store so if you see them there let me know.

Fun Food Find Friday!!!

Each Friday I will post about a treat that I've found. There is no reason why the treats that we eat can't be healthier too. These treats are ones that I give to my children since we don't do refined sugar in our home. I am not trying to promote these companies or stores for money. I just want to share my knowledge with you on the healthier alternatives that are out there, whether you buy or make them. I hope you find Friday's useful! :]

First to make my list is Panda ALL NATURAL Licorice. If you like licorice and you haven't tried Panda you are missing out! The flavor is amazing. It is the best black licorice out there. I would know because I have always love love LOVED black licorice, and I've tried them all. They do have wheat in them, all licorices do. So if you have ciliactic's I'm sorry that you can't have these. I am gluten intolerant and I do just fine with eating a little bit, but it's hard to eat just a little. :]

You can buy Panda at the Health food stores, Good Earth and Sunflower Market, and most grocery stores. The grocery stores will either have it in their healthy section or over by their pharmacy where the protein bars are.

If you find some healthier treats, fill free to share them with me. I always like a good find!
